CF Benidorm made it three wins from three in the Lliga Comunitat on Sunday, securing a dramatic 1–0 victory over CF Gandia at the Estadio Guillermo Amor.
The victory means Benidorm now have 9 points from a possible 9, maintaining a 100% start to the season after three matches. It was also the team’s first clean sheet of the season.
After a goalless opening 45 minutes and a second half that looked to be heading towards a draw, Benidorm found the breakthrough in the final few seconds to claim all three points.
A goalless first half
Sergio Mora named the following starting XI for the clash with Gandia:
Arcana, Denzel, Viti, Arona, Green, Sergi, Alvarito, Daniel, Luis, Davi and Cario.
Both sides went into the game unbeaten, with Benidorm looking to continue their perfect start following victories over Jávea and CFI Alicante.
The opening half ultimately produced no goals, with the two teams going into the interval level at 0–0.
Late, late drama
The second half continued in a similar fashion, with neither side able to find the decisive breakthrough.
However, just when it looked like Benidorm would have to settle for a point, 16-year-old Kai became the hero.Kai only made his CF Benidorm debut last weekend in the victory away at CFI Alicante, before celebrating his 16th birthday this week. And now, just days after turning 16, he has written his name into the early story of Benidorm’s season by scoring the winning goal in the final seconds against Gandia.
The 1–0 victory secured all three points, took Benidorm to 9 points from 9, and saw the team record their first clean sheet of the season.
Claudio López in attendance
There was also a notable presence at the Guillermo Amor, with CF Benidorm Sporting Vice-President Claudio ‘Piojo’ López in attendance to support the team.
The former Valencia and Argentina international is one of the most recognisable figures involved in the club’s sporting structure, having enjoyed a distinguished playing career that included winning the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup with Valencia, reaching the UEFA Champions League final and representing Argentina at two World Cups.
López was able to watch from the stands as Benidorm secured another important victory.
More positive news for the women’s teams
It was also a positive weekend for CF Benidorm’s women’s section.
The women’s Juvenil side played out an entertaining 4–4 draw against CF La Nucia, while the senior women’s team started their pre-season campaign with an impressive 5–2 victory away to CD El Campello.
