Match Preview: Novelda Union C.F. vs CF Benidorm

CF Benidorm will head into the sixth round of the Lliga Comunitat still sitting proudly at the top of the table, with 13 points from their opening five matches.

However, after winning their first four games of the season, Benidorm dropped their first points of the campaign last weekend as they were held to a goalless draw by CD Almoradí. The result may have brought an end to their perfect start, but Sergio Mora’s side remain unbeaten and top of the division as they now look to bounce back with another difficult away fixture.

Novelda Unión await

The next challenge comes on the road as Benidorm travel to face Novelda Unión CF.

The fixture was originally scheduled for Sunday 11 October at 6pm local time. However, Novelda requested that the game be brought forward to Saturday 10 October, with the match now kicking off at 12pm local time, or 11am UK time.

The change appears to suit both clubs, particularly when it comes to the travelling support. A Saturday lunchtime kick-off should make the journey considerably easier for those making the trip to support Benidorm, which can only be a positive for the club.

But while the earlier kick-off may help those travelling, Benidorm will still face a serious test on the pitch.

A dangerous Novelda side

Novelda Unión currently sit sixth in the Lliga Comunitat with nine points from their opening five matches.

Their results so far have highlighted both their quality and their inconsistency.

Most recently, Novelda produced one of the more impressive results of the opening weeks of the season, travelling to Alberic and coming away with all three points. Alberic had spent much of the early part of the campaign alongside Benidorm at the top of the table, although they have now slipped to fourth.

That victory brought an end to two consecutive defeats, however.

Novelda were beaten 1-0 at home by Olímpic Xàtiva, who currently sit second in the table and have now put together three consecutive victories. They then suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Benigànim CF, who currently occupy 14th place.

Before those defeats, Novelda had put together two impressive victories.

They opened their league campaign with a 1-0 home victory over Rayo Ibense before following that up with a 2-0 win against Almoradí, the same Almoradí side who would later take two points from Benidorm at the weekend.

It makes Novelda a difficult side to predict.

They have already shown that they are capable of beating teams towards the top end of the division, while their defeats against Benigànim and Olímpic Xàtiva demonstrate that they can also be vulnerable.

Another big test for the league leaders

Novelda are yet to draw a game this season, with two wins and two defeats alongside their most recent victory over Alberic. That record, combined with Benidorm’s desire to return to winning ways, could make for an intriguing encounter on Saturday.

For Benidorm, the objective is simple: get back to winning ways and maintain their position at the summit of the Lliga Comunitat.

The goalless draw with Almoradí showed that this division is not going to be won without difficult afternoons along the way. But with Benidorm still unbeaten after five games and sitting top of the table, there is no reason for the side to panic.

A difficult away trip, an in-form opponent capable of producing big results and an early Saturday kick-off await. Can CF Benidorm return from Novelda with another three points?
