Match Review
CF Benidorm extended their unbeaten start to the season with a 1–1 draw away to CE Alberic, although the dramatic finish left Sergio Mora’s side feeling that two points had slipped away.
Benidorm had not played since their 4–2 victory away to Novelda on 10th October. The postponement of the previous weekend’s top-of-the-table meeting with CD Olímpic de Xàtiva meant there was always a possibility of some early rustiness, and the opening stages proved slow and evenly contested.
There was little to separate the teams during the first half, but Benidorm fashioned two or three clear-cut opportunities and could reasonably have expected to lead at the interval. Goalkeeper-threatening action was otherwise limited, while the referee showed three yellow cards as the competitive contest occasionally threatened to boil over.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 81st minute. Hugo García met a corner with a header to put Benidorm in front and seemingly within touching distance of another victory.
The lead lasted only three minutes. Alberic were awarded a penalty and converted it to level the score, transforming the closing stages into a frantic finish.
Benidorm will be frustrated not to have held on, having been nine minutes away from taking all three points. However, Alberic demonstrated why they are among the division’s top five and made this a demanding away fixture.
The draw leaves Benidorm unbeaten on 17 points from seven matches, with five wins and two draws. They will look to respond when they travel to Benigànim CF next weekend.
Team News
Sergio Mora made two changes to his starting XI for the Lliga Comunitat FFCV fixture, bringing Arona Ndoye and Sergi Sempere into the side.
Ndoye’s return was particularly welcome. The midfielder was restored to the starting line-up just 20 days after being taken to hospital by ambulance following a head collision in the goalless draw with CD Almoradí on 4 October. After missing the victory over Novelda, he made his return to competitive action at Alberic.
Sempere also returned to the starting XI, replacing Bipeba Jorge following Jorge’s dismissal in the 4–2 win over Novelda Unión.
